Blitzing Your Facebook Profile – The Easy Way

in geekery, necessary evils, raves

I recently wanted to delete most of my stuff from Facebook, primarily because I never know when their privacy policy will change or another security hole will be found.  I don`t put much on there, but nevertheless I don`t want it all over the planet.

I decided to look around for a quick way of doing this, short of deleting the account, but nothing seemed to be foolproof.
Until I stumbled across a Firefox plugin I hadn`t used in years, iMacros for Firefox.

Facebook change the site almost as often as Paul McCartney dyes his hair that strange reddish brown colour, so stuff I`d stumbled across that worked a few months back was now useless.  However, the mobile site isn`t updated too often, so we`re good to go.

1. Install the iMacros plugin, and bring up its sidebar by clicking on the iMacros icon.  On my browser, this icon sits beside the address bar.

2. Nip over to http://m.facebook.com and go to your profile page. This means we`re logged in and ready to do the do.  Now note the URL that you`re looking at.  In my case it was http://m.facebook.com/myusername?v=feed&refid=0&_rdr

Yours should be similar.  Copy this away somewhere for later use…

3. Edit one of the macros that comes with iMacros.  It doesn`t really matter; we just need to be able to get up and running quickly.  In this case I`ve chosen to edit  Demo-Firefox -> Demo-Filter.iim – I don`t care what this does.

4. Replace the content of your chosen macro with:-

VERSION BUILD=7401004 RECORDER=FX
TAB T=1
URL GOTO=http://m.facebook.com/yourusername?v=feed&refid=0&_rdr
TAG POS=2 TYPE=SPAN ATTR=TXT:Profile
TAG POS=1 TYPE=A ATTR=TXT:Remove
TAG POS=1 TYPE=INPUT:SUBMIT ATTR=VALUE:Remove
TAG POS=1 TYPE=A ATTR=TXT:Remove
TAG POS=1 TYPE=INPUT:SUBMIT ATTR=VALUE:Remove

5. Close the iMacros edit window and save the new content.  You can even rename it to something else if you like.

6. Manually “Play” this macro once, and watch as your most recent update is removed.

7. Now for the fun part; change the “Repeat Macro” section from Max:3 to e.g. Max 100, and hit Play (Loop).

Go make a cup of tea, then come back to a much more pleasing Facebook profile.
