Dear Mobile Phone Spammers. What Is Your Problem This Time?

in rants

The current flavour of the month here in the UK appears to be SMS text message spam where you`ll receive some bullshit or other about being entitled to money following a mysterious accident. Are people in other countries receiving this rubbish? Has anyone managed to find out more about who/what is sending it? I`m more interested in finding out how my mobile phone number has made it out into the wild.

I`d assume some eejit has gone out and bought a Pay As You Go SIM card and a thrown together a nasty little piece of software. Perhaps they`re trying every number in the 077-079 range?

Free Msg; Our records indicate that you may be entitled to £3450 for the accident you had. To apply free reply CLAIM to this message. To opt out text STOP.

For anyone who`s not familiar with this kind of stuff, you shouldn`t send any kind of reply. You basically ignore the message in the same way you`d ignore a spam e-mail, unless you think it`s worth complaining to your mobile phone provider and/or OFCOM. Either way, I think there`s currently little chance of getting anywhere with this one. At least with e-mail you can train a filter to automatically delete the e-mail. I may end up calling my mobile phone network to see what they can do as it`s getting more than a little annoying.

Here`s my current “list” (does 3 consitute a list?) of numbers:-

+447542020767  (07542020767 in the UK)
+447522406122  (07522406122 in the UK)
+447864349813  (07864349813 in the UK)

If anyone is found with these numbers, I`ll be one of many people coming by to offer you a swift kick up the arse.  Tossbudgies.
